The Golden Ring House

The permanent exhibition at the Golden Ring House presents a unique collection of 20th century Czech art at the City Gallery Prague, a fund which has its own special character determined by its history, exhibition and acquisition programmes. It comprises important collections and remarkable, highly individual works. One of the ways to make the fund more accessible is to introduce the visitor to the complex history of 20th century Czech art in a way which confronts works of various periods, artistic movements and distinct qualities. In many respects, the Golden Ring House, itself a complex space, is well suited to the exhibition's conception: the three floors of the building correspond to the three key themes which, instead of a chronological division, inspire an arrangement of individual approaches presenting 20th century Czech art from various angles yet remaining within an enclosed, general framework. 

The first part of the exhibition, entitled Dream, Myth, Ideal points to the many possibilities offered by archetypal sources, the ambiguous return to creative beginnings or Arcadian serenity, and also romantic irony. 
Perhaps no genre in 20th century art has depicted misrepresentation and distortion to such a degree as figural painting, for which the second floor has been reserved under the heading In the Distorted Mirror and behind the Mirror. This part of the exhibition shows the distinct ways in which stimuli derived from reality have been re-evaluated, from natural distortion and expressive metamorphosis to socio-critical banter with political subtexts. 
Modern art has also fostered an endeavour to transform the artwork into a prefiguration of the future, thereby anticipating it through opinions and various technical means. This line of thought runs through the third part of the exhibition - Utopia, Vision, Order - associated both with avant-garde concepts defining the course of Czech art until recently, and with a highly personal approach stressing the role of vision, experience and a focused attitude to objectivity.
